Salut a tous,

1979 CBX for sale $11,000
Postby scrambler1963 » Mon Jul 16, 2018 8:23 pm
I am selling my 1979 CBX after 23 years of ownership and zero years of riding it. I bought this from a man I worked with. He bought it at the J. Wood auction at the AMA Vintage Racing Days Mid-Ohio Raceway in ’92 or ’93. It had never been titled and had approx. 6000 miles on it. He was the first to title it and sold it to me in March 1995 with 8,960.2 miles. I put it in my garage and it never left. Over the last year or so I have had contact with Jan Ringnalda, Ian Foster, and J.R. Luksik by phone or email about the possibilities of selling a non-runner. They all thought it would be tough. I met an excellent retired motorcycle mechanic here who agreed to help.
In the last few months the following was done:
Brake master cylinders- disassembled, cleaned new kits installed
Brake calipers- disassembled, cleaned reassembled, OEM pads were retained as excellent
Brake lines-flushed and cleaned with alcohol and brake fluid
Gas tank- removed, flushed with ethanol free gas, cleaned with EvapoRust, petcock disassembled and cleaned with EvapoRust and new kit installed, gas cap gasket replaced
Carbs- engine lowered per maintenance manual and carb bank removed, carbs disassembled, cleaned and checked all needles, jets and passageways, replaced slow jet rubber plugs and installed accelerator pump kit, reassembled and bench synched carbs, reinstalled carb rack with new carb intake boots, fuel cut-off valve vacuum tested good
Valve cover- removed cover, no wear found on valve gear, checked valve clearances-all good, reset cam chain tensioners, reinstalled cover with new gasket, new bolt grommets, and new tach drive seal
Engine- reinstalled per maintenance manual, drained and refilled oil before startup, new spark plugs, and new air filter
Start-up-with aux tank in place, used vacuum pump to open fuel shut-off and fill float bowls with ethanol free gas, new battery, choke on and started instantly, later vacuum synched the carbs with a CARBTUNE PRO synchronizer
Tank reinstalled with in-line fuel filter and new fuel hose, a few days later left the garage for the first time in 23 years when the mechanic took a 9 mile test ride with zero problems
The bike is completely stock except for a 1980 tailpiece with glove box, and later tires which are now 23 years old, and of course the battery is a Goldwing spec AGM without the plastic spacer needed. Ian Foster told me the eight holes in the end of each muffler were not stock (but i'm sure it makes 40 more horsepower... well at least more noise). The upper shock nuts have been replaced with aftermarket types that bungee cords will attach to safely. There is a highway peg bar that can be easily removed if not wanted. Every item on the bike works correctly. The pipes have the same rust in the same places that all of them do but are still very solid. There is a small shallow dent with several scratches in the black area of the tank just above the seat. I have sent pictures to Larry Zimmer and he will attach these when this is posted. If anyone is interested, I will send any photo you want to see, even if it’s a close up of one nut or bolt. This is not that $27,000 museum piece that was on Ebay a while back. It is a bike that was ridden 8,969 miles and has very little wear.
I don’t text, twit or Facebook. I do use a telephone and I do return calls if you leave a message with a name and a phone number. I type with two fingers so I will email a brief couple of paragraphs but will eventually want to be on the phone. I will gladly answer any and all question about this bike.
Thanks,
Marc
